Often, a paper will be returned or rejected because it has too many grammatical errors. Here is a list of common mistakes that we will check for and correct using the Track Changes function in Microsoft Word:

  • repeated words (such as “the the”)
  • homophone errors (such as “there,” “their,” and “they’re”)
  • missing or unnecessary commas
  • open parentheses or brackets
  • extra spaces
  • incorrect word usage (such as “that” versus “which”)
  • inconsistent spelling of words or names (such as “okay,” “ok,” and “OK”)
  • inconsistent hyphenation
  • abbreviations not spelled out at first use
  • overcapitalization
