Often, a paper will be returned or rejected because it has too many grammatical errors. Here is a list of common mistakes that we will check for and correct using the Track Changes function in Microsoft Word:
- repeated words (such as “the the”)
- homophone errors (such as “there,” “their,” and “they’re”)
- missing or unnecessary commas
- open parentheses or brackets
- extra spaces
- incorrect word usage (such as “that” versus “which”)
- inconsistent spelling of words or names (such as “okay,” “ok,” and “OK”)
- inconsistent hyphenation
- abbreviations not spelled out at first use
- overcapitalization
